Philosophy and Creative Outlook

Surface Area Dance Theater CIC is led by Creative Director Nicole Vivien Watson and resides at Dance City, we are based in Newcastle upon Tyne and operate throughout the wider North East region. Our company is limited by guarantee with social aims that adheres to a Community Interest Statement, which is to be regulated on an annual basis. Surface Area Dance Theatre CIC operates under a two-tier management structure to demonstrate transparency and accountability to local communities; We are a not-for-profit distribution company with an asset lock. Our organisation provides a platform that addresses disparities between provision of positive creative health activities, in smaller and more disadvantaged communities than those in larger or more affluent communities. Our work aims to attract people who have fewer opportunities due to geographical isolation and poverty, and lower confidence due to cultural isolation.

For the past six years our company members and participants have contributed to developing an original movement language that is formed by identity, this reflecting the creative and social inspirations of our company. We have achieved this by dedicating ourselves to periods of intensive research and development, the presentation of work through live performance, connecting with our immediate and wider communities, cross art form collaborations and international exchanges.

Internationally the company has performed repertoire in Barcelona, Brussels, Sao Paulo - Brazil and Tokyo - Japan. Over the past two years Surface Area Dance Theatre has begun to form connections with cultural organisations within New York City, performing by invitation company repertoire at Brooklyn Arts Exchange - 2009 and Judson Memorial Church - 2010. In May this year Dust ( please visit our gallery to view Dust images ) was performed at La Mamma, NYC as part of the international festival La Mama Moves.

Surface Area Dance Theatre is recognised by audience members, supporters and larger cultural organisations as a company that explores new territory in dance and performance art,  we are adventurous, are open to new possibilities and understand the importance and benefit of cross art form collaborations. Our work is celebrated, as is our ambition to become a flag ship company for contemporary dance, while also having a presence nationally and internationally.
