Surface Area Dance Theatre is a registered community interest company therefore a number of procedures have been designed to create a stable well organised company. By striving for good practice and making all objectives transparent, the company operates effectively, safely and efficiently.
Our organisation provides a platform that addresses disparities between the provision of positive creative activities in smaller and more disadvantaged communities than those in larger or more affluent communities.
The groups of people we aim to attract are those who have fewer opportunities due to geographical isolation and poverty, and lower confidence due to cultural isolation.
Surface Area Dance Theatre offers workshop packages that aim to encourage creative expression and enable participants to achieve a greater understanding of their bodies through physical exercise, discussion and group activities. Our focus is to maintain a positive and safe environment where people are encouraged to use this time as personal development.
The workshops are delivered by two experienced company members who specialise in exercise through dance and creative expression. They have been working as positive community role models for over three years.
Our work has been designed to help meet the learning needs of individuals, and has the ability to engage communities of different ages, abilities and backgrounds.
At Surface Area Dance Theatre one of our passions is working with young people who are involved in professional training. Passed residencies include Newcastle College (Guest Choreographer, Repertoire Workshops & Business Seminars), Northumbria University (Research Program) and Dance City's Advanced Training Program (Guest Choreographer).
We have many ways in which we achieve this work, one example is a specifically designed program that integrates dance, film and music into a 12 week residency. The students have the opportunity to work with professional sound, film and media equipment to create a dance for camera film. Each participant receives a lasting record of their achievements and involvement in the project. Many have used this DVD as a promotional tools with which to find employment in the creative sector after graduation.
